The challenge
A Norwegian producer of nutrition ingredients for salmon, marine fish and shrimp feed needed to fill drums of several sizes accurately and hygienically. The project was led by a Norwegian food-industry engineering partner.
The solution

An LSB, a semi-automatic in-line drum filler. The operator centres the bunghole under the nozzle, and from there filling is automatic and safe. It takes metal and plastic drums from 60 to 250 litres, and its parts are easy to clean, as food production requires.
The result
Sixty drums an hour, with less handling of the product and the same machine for every drum size.

How the LSB works
The nozzle of the LSB does not move; the drum does. The drum is rolled onto the weighing platform, which has free rollers, and turned until the bunghole sits under the nozzle. On start, the machine tares and fills to the net weight, from coarse to fine flow. Filling height is adjusted to each drum size without tools, which is why the same machine takes every drum from 60 to 250 litres in this project.
Why it suits food and feed ingredients
There is no head to position, no axis to motorise and nothing to go out of alignment, so there is little to clean and little to maintain. Filling recipes are stored per product and drum size, and the operator only places, aligns and removes the drum: the product is never handled by hand.
