The challenge

For its hygiene and disinfection products, Christeyns needed to fill peracetic acid — corrosive, and prone to foaming — and other acid and alkaline products into three container families from the same line: IBCs, 200 L drums and jerrycans, all arriving on pallets. Floor space at the plant was limited, and the line had to connect to the chain conveyor and stretch wrapper already in place.

The solution

A single Robot Filler does the whole job. Because floor space was short, the robot is mounted on a gantry above the conveyor instead of standing beside it. A vision system locates each container and the robot changes tools as needed: it uncaps, fills and recaps IBCs; uncaps, fills, caps and seals 200 L drums; and fills 20 and 60 L jerrycans.

Two dosing nozzles are permanently assigned, one to the acid family and one to the alkaline family, so products never share a nozzle and there is no changeover between them. Both are immersion nozzles: they go down to the bottom of the container and rise with the liquid, staying submerged so that foam stays low. Pump speed is controlled in real time — slow start, full flow, then a gradual slow-down from around 80% of the target weight — so the machine is fast without losing weight accuracy.

The robot arm is enclosed in a protective sleeve against acid vapours and splashes. Format changes are a recipe change, with no mechanical intervention.

The result

A fully automatic line that handles IBCs, drums and jerrycans with one robot, at around 17 IBCs and 36–37 drums an hour, feeding straight into the customer’s existing conveying and wrapping.
