Aicrov, based with its production centre in the Riu Clar industrial estate in Tarragona and dedicated to the design and manufacture of machinery for filling liquids into large-format containers, has set course for India. There they have just signed a contract with the state oil company Bharat Petroleum to supply the machinery for a new drum filling plant.
The line will have sixteen filling robots in a highly explosive and flammable area, and will be assembled in Tarragona over the coming two months. In June a team of two will travel to India to direct the installation, which will run for around three months more, up to final turnkey handover at the end of August or the beginning of September.
New premises. Barely three weeks ago Aicrov moved from its old unit in the Riu Clar industrial estate in Tarragona to another with three times the usable floor space — 2,000 square metres — in the same estate. After a €50,000 investment in refitting the building, this is where they will assemble the machines that are just now finishing their design phase.
Two overhead travelling cranes and a new technical office housing twenty of Aicrov’s thirty employees are the most significant improvements, beyond the floor space itself. Three metal 3D printers will shortly be added for prototyping work.
Once the prototypes are ready and the designs adjusted, the manufacture of the line components is contracted to outside companies, mainly in the Tarragona area, with final assembly in Tarragona.
The petrochemical sector. India is not the only destination for the machines this company designs, builds and installs. France, Great Britain, Germany, Saudi Arabia, the Dominican Republic and Mexico are other international markets it has already entered.
In 80% of cases, Albert Rovira explains, these are projects destined for the petrochemical sector. The pharmaceutical, logistics and food sectors follow well behind, since Aicrov’s specialism is machinery for filling aggressive products — chemicals and oil products — always into large-format containers.
With machines capable of filling containers from one litre upwards, most of its projects are designed for containers between 10 and 1,500 litres, particularly drums and IBCs.
Companies present in the Tarragona petrochemical hub such as BASF, Repsol, Shell, Clariant, Covestro and Terquimsa are among its customers. Aicrov’s activity began in 2006 in this industrial environment, where, after setting up on his own having worked as an employee at other companies, Albert Rovira began providing maintenance and reprogramming services on chemical filling machinery.
It was not until 2009 that, alongside those services and the resale of third-party machinery, Aicrov took a step forward and began designing and building its own machines for filling large-format containers. Today 98% of its turnover is tied to machine manufacture and after-sales service.
